John F. Helliwell is Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and former co-director (2005-2017, with George Akerlof) of CIFAR’s program on “Social Interactions, Identity and Well-Being”.

He is also Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of British Columbia, a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and Co-editor of the World Happiness Reports since their origin in 2012. He was also a founding Board Member, and is currently member of the advisory council, of the International Positive Psychology Association. He was previously Killam Visiting Fellow at the University of Calgary in 2005, visiting special advisor at the Bank of Canada in 2003-04, visiting research fellow of Merton College, Oxford, in 2003, of St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, in 2001, and Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard in 1991-94. He was also a long-time member of the National Statistics Council and of the Board of the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Canadian Economics Association, and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

His fields of interest include social capital, applied macroeconomics, international economics, and comparative economic growth.

He obtained his Ph.D. from Nuttfield College in Oxford, United Kingdom.
